This reminds me of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich," only Hermman's "Coming Out of the Ice" is a first hand autobiography. Hermman doesn't pull any punches when describing his trip from teenage American citizen, to Soviet star, to a zek within the gulag system.
